How to remove Sulfur from your water

Oh no! You’ve smelled that rotten egg smell as soon as you turn on your faucet or shower. What’s that mean? You’ve got sulfur in your water, and it’s running all throughout the house. When you have this problem, it doesn’t just impact one portion of the house. It compromises your entire water supply, which means you have to attack it with the right solution. Keep reading to dissect the issue in each section of your house as well as the solution that can help regardless of location.

Protect your kitchen from sulfur water

You may identify an issue in your kitchen when you smell bad-smelling water coming from your faucets, the dishwasher, the fridge, etc. Often, you’ll know that you have sulfur water not only from the smell but because of the black or yellow stains on your fixtures or utensils. When your kitchen has this smell, it’s a problem because it will impact the way that your food smells and tastes. Your water will be impacted, and any time you go to wash your hands, your hands will end up smelling like sulfur as well.

Protect your laundry from rotten egg odor in your water

Sulfur water in your laundry room may be one of the most frustrating parts of this whole process. After all, when you put laundry in your washing machine, you want them to be cleaner at the end of the process, right? Yet, sulfur water means bad-smelling water, bad-smelling clothes, and a bad-smelling washer overall. There’s no way your clothes will come out cleaner while you’re dealing with sulfur in your water. The only way to solve this problem is to get to the root cause.

If you’re smelling that rotten egg odor coming straight from your washing machine, then you’ll need to clean it in addition to addressing the water source. Here are a few ways to do it!

  • Using a rag and a cleaning solution, physically clean off the soap build-up from the rubber gasket around the door. The cleaning solution that you use will help you significantly improve the cleaning efficiency. Either use a bathroom cleaner than contains bleach or a 1:1 solution of water and vinegar.
  • Fill the bleach dispenser of your washing machine and run the empty washing machine through a cleaning cycle. You can also substitute the bleach for ½ cup of baking soda and 2 cups of distilled white vinegar (pouring this in when the tub is half full).

After you’ve cleaned out your washing machine, be sure to leave the door or lid open overnight to allow it to air out. The interior should completely dry before your next wash.

Protect your hot water heater from sulfur water

Much like your washer, your hot water heater may have stinky water in it. However, while you can clean out your hot water heater itself for a partial solution, you’ll still need to remove the sulfur in your water to solve the issue long-term. Here’s how you can clean your hot water heater if it has sulfur in it.

  1. Determine whether your hot water heater is gas and electric. To flush out your hot water heater, you’ll need to shut off either the gas to the hot water heater or the electricity.
  2. Then, turn all faucets inside and outside the home ON fully. Once the water has run for 10 minutes, turn the water OFF. This will help to flush out all the pipes in your home.
  3. To flush out the water heater itself, do not turn off the incoming water supply. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve on the lower side of the water heater and allow it to drain outside in an area that is safe for drainage. After about 10 minutes, take a sample cup and see if there are particles settling to the bottom of the cup. If there are NOT particles, then you can turn off the drain valve and disconnect the hose. If there are particles, continue draining and checking every 10 minutes until there are not.
  4. If odor persists, you can also disinfect your hot water heater by turning your hot water heater to HIGH for two hours to kill any sulfate-reducing bacteria.

This process should help to reduce the rotten egg odor in your house!
